South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has delivered a clear directive to his squad ahead of their crucial Africa Cup of Nations clash with Egypt: do not be mesmerised by the individual stardom of Mohamed Salah.
As the Bafana Bafana prepare to face one of the tournament's most formidable sides, Broos has focused his pre-match preparations on the psychological battle, urging his players to respect their opponent's collective strength rather than fixating on a single superstar.
“They are such a good team. Why should we focus on one player?” Broos stated in his pre-match comments. “We have to be prepared to beat the team rather than [seeing to it that] Salah doesn’t play good or [Omar] Marmoush doesn’t play good. No; for us, it’s the team that’s important and we don’t really focus on one player.”
This approach represents a nuanced balance of respect and self-belief. Broos readily acknowledged that seven-time champions Egypt represent a significant step up in quality from their opening opponents, Zimbabwe and Angola, describing the Pharaohs as “a team a level higher.” However, he was equally adamant that his players must not abandon their own identity in the face of a prestigious name.
“There are some precautions we have to take... but in the other way, we don’t have to forget our qualities. We don’t have to forget the way we played in the past,” Broos added, reinforcing the message that South Africa must trust in the system that secured their opening victory.
The warning from the experienced Belgian manager comes at a pivotal moment in the group stage. Both nations enter the match with three points after winning their opening fixtures, making the encounter a likely decider for top spot in the group.
