As President John Mahama prepares to take office on January 7th, residents of Ghana’s Western Region are urging the new administration to prioritize key developmental projects that have been left incomplete by the outgoing administration.
Residents are eager to see the region thrive under Mahama’s leadership, particularly with regards to several stalled initiatives. Among the top priorities for residents are the completion of the PTC Interchange, the Takoradi Market Circle, and efforts to address the pollution of river bodies, all of which have been a source of significant hardship for the people.
One of the most pressing concerns is the PTC Interchange, a major infrastructure project that is causing severe traffic congestion, particularly for those heading to the central business district.
Speaking with some residents, they bemoaned the current state of the interchange, which is creating bottlenecks, which have been particularly hazardous for ambulances transporting the sick. “Driving has become a nightmare. Ambulances struggle to get through the traffic, and in critical situations, lives are at risk,” said a concerned resident.
The Takoradi Market Circle and the extension works at Effia Nkwanta Hospital are also unfinished, as budgetary constraints due to the Domestic Debt Exchange have stalled progress. These projects, which started under the previous government, are vital to improving infrastructure and healthcare in the region.
In addition to these infrastructure needs, residents are calling for the industrialization of the Western Region, citing its rich natural resources as an untapped asset.
Many are urging the government to focus on reviving dormant industries to create jobs and address high unemployment among the region’s youth.
Mary Cudjoe, a resident of Sekondi, emphasized the importance of revitalizing defunct factories, including an ice block factory in Sekondi, which could provide employment and support the local fishing industry.
Environmental concerns are also a major issue for many in the region. Residents along the Pra and Ankobra rivers are demanding urgent action to address the environmental damage caused by illegal mining activities.
Alex, a resident of Daboase, shared his concern over the worsening water quality, which has impacted public health.
A recent medical check-up revealed an alarming rise in his PH levels due to the contamination of the Bodie River, a crucial water source for the community.
With the good people of Western Region giving the NDC’ John Mahama a resounding victory of 59.18 percent in the recent election the hopes of residents are high in the John Mahama-led government in completing all stalled projects and introduce initiatives to develop the region which has been left behind.
