The year 2024 saw Ghanaian women in sports breaking barriers and setting new records across various disciplines. It began with the Black Queens securing their ticket to Morocco 2025. Despite missing out on the Paris Olympic Games after a tough encounter with the Copper Queens, their journey under Nora Hauptle drew admiration for their attractive style of play and goal-scoring prowess.
As the Queens celebrated their qualification, the spotlight shifted to the Black Princesses. Guided by Coach Yussif Basigi, the Princesses claimed glory at the Accra 2023 Games, with jubilant celebrations highlighted by the Casfordians serenading the team after their victory.
Track and field star Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah made headlines as she leapt into history. Though she initially fell short of the Olympic qualifying mark of 1.94m, her perseverance paid off when she cleared 1.97m months later, setting a national record and earning her place at the Paris Olympics.
On the domestic football scene, Army Ladies triumphed over Police Ladies 1-0 in the FA Cup final, with Deborah Opoku’s decisive goal marking a historic first title for the Army Ladies. In the Women’s Premier League, Ampem Darkoa continued their dominance, securing back-to-back titles over rivals Hasaacas Ladies.
Thelma Baffour joined an elite club by becoming the second Ghanaian woman to win the CAF Women’s Champions League, leading TP Mazembe to glory. She followed in the footsteps of Blessing Shine Agbomadzie, who achieved the feat with ASFAR in 2021.
Boxing saw a landmark achievement when Abigail Quartey claimed the WIBF Super Bantamweight title at the Bukom Boxing Arena, becoming Ghana’s first female world boxing champion.
As the year drew to a close, Sandra Boakye made history as the first female coach to lead a male team to the finals of the Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Colleges competition. Despite a valiant effort, her school, SIMMS Commercial High School, fell to Osei Kyeretwie.
The Black Maidens capped off the year with a remarkable victory, hosting and winning the inaugural WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup, a fitting conclusion to a year where women in sports continually led the way.
