A Former Auditor-General, Daniel Yao Domelevo has criticized the government for failing to fulfil its promise of moving Ghana from taxation to production.
Delivering the keynote address at a public forum on “Curbing Illicit Financial Flows Through Accountable Governance – Role of the Media” he said, “Recently I remarked that we were promised that this country is moving from taxation to production, is that not it? But we move from taxation to robbery.”
Making reference to the recent Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDE), the former Auditor-General emphasised that government has robbed the citizens to the extent of aiming at even the money in their pockets.
“You put your savings there and government is aiming at it. You go and buy treasury bills, if you don’t take time, it may go after the bonds et cetera have gone.” He stated.
He noted that the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government despites the pain caused to Ghanaians have resorted to gaslighting when being questioned.
He maintained that “today there is a lot of gaslighting. The very people who are squeezing all the resources out of us look at you and say you are not praising them; you are not even being grateful for the harm [they] are committing against you.”
The public forum organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa in Accra brought together stakeholders in anti-corruption sector to explore the role of the media in tackling illicit financial flow in the country and beyond.
