The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has accused President Nana Akufo-Addo and the judiciary, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, of deliberately delaying the passage of the Family Values Bill.
Speaking during an interview with Beatrice Adu on November 20, he alleged that these actions were part of a calculated effort to prevent the bill from becoming law.
Sam George expressed frustration with what he described as a lack of commitment from the President and the judiciary to uphold Ghanaian cultural values. He alleged that President Akufo-Addo’s actions demonstrate a pro-LGBTQ stance, despite public statements to the contrary.
“When Kamala Harris came to Ghana and confronted him about the bill, he disowned it, claiming he knew nothing about it. His actions speak louder than words,” Sam George said.
The MP further criticized the Chief Justice, accusing her of obstructing justice and working to shield the President from taking action on the bill.
“The Chief Justice, who claims to be a Christian, is finding ways to prevent the bill from reaching the President,” he stated.
The Family Values Bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ activities in Ghana, was passed by Parliament and forwarded to the Presidency. However, the MP claimed that the executive has stalled its progress, despite public pressure.
On the future of the bill, Sam George dismissed concerns that the legislative process will need to restart if the current Parliament ends without presidential assent.
“The bill has been duly passed by Parliament and will proceed to the next President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, who will act with fidelity to Ghanaian values,” he assured.
The Supreme Court has set December 18, 2024, to deliver its judgement on the case concerning the bill, but Sam George remains skeptical, suggesting the delays are politically motivated to extend the matter beyond President Akufo-Addo’s term.
“There will be a change in government on January 7, and those obstructing justice today will eventually account for their actions,” he warned.
The debate surrounding the Family Values Bill continues to stir national discourse, with proponents and critics holding strong opposing views on its potential impact.
