Ghana have failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Angola on Friday.
The Black Stars took the lead through a stunning free kick from Jordan Ayew, but Angola, the dominant side, equalised to end Ghana’s qualification hopes.
Ayew’s moment of brilliance came in the 18th minute when his perfectly executed free kick dipped past the goalkeeper, giving Ghana a much-needed boost after a series of underwhelming performances in their previous four games.
Ghana managed to hold onto the lead through solid defending, with Manaf Nurudeen making a crucial penalty save to keep the scoreline intact at halftime.
However, Angola’s dominance paid off in the second half when substitute Zini, left unmarked in the box, headed in the equaliser to seal Ghana’s fate.
The draw means Ghana will miss the AFCON tournament for the first time since 2004, marking a significant setback for the national team. Angola have secured their qualification, while Sudan remain a strong contender needing just a point in their final game to join them. Niger could also qualify if they beat Ghana and Sudan lose.
Ghana’s lacklustre campaign will conclude on Monday with a match against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium, a game that now holds little significance for the Black Stars.
