In a landmark move, the African Union (AU) has taken a significant step towards harnessing the benefits of migration by validating a comprehensive action plan to implement the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).
The two-day meeting, which concluded on 29th August 2024 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Ghana, brought together senior officials from AU member states to finalise the continent’s strategy for managing migration.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Doreen Annan, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior, hailed the validation of the action plan as a major milestone in the AU’s efforts to address complex migration dynamics in Africa. “We are committed to ensuring that migration becomes a positive force for development, benefiting both migrants and host communities,” she said.
The action plan focuses on strengthening migration governance and policy frameworks; protecting migrants’ rights and addressing vulnerabilities; harnessing the economic benefits of migration and addressing the root causes of migration.
The meeting emphasised the importance of international cooperation, partnership, and information sharing in achieving the GCM objectives. The progress report from the meeting will inform the second International Migration Review Forum in Addis Ababa, scheduled for October this year.
