General Transport Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union members demand fair pay

The General Transport Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) of Ghana has called on government through the Ministry of Transport and employers for a fair compensation for road transport professionals.

According to the Union, the current rate paid to the driver’s has made them worse off, affecting their mental and physical wellbeing.

In a statement issued and signed by the General Secretary of the Union, Fuseini Iddrisu, indicated that if the drivers are not paid well, it compels them to work long hours.

“The work of road transport professionals is physically and mentally demanding. They are often required to work extended hours under challenging conditions. If the drivers are not paid fairly for all the time they work, they are pushed to work even longer and drive whilst fatigued so they can pay the bills.

“Drivers must be paid a safe rate for all the time they work. Their pay must reflect the intensity and risk associated with this job to ensure that workers are compensated justly for their dedication and sacrifices,” he demanded.

The General Secretary stated that enhanced pay will result in road safety.

“Fair pay is essential for attracting and retaining skilled workers in the road transport sector. By providing competitive and safe rates, we can help prevent turnover and maintain a workforce that is both experienced and motivated”.

“Road transport workers are integral to our economic prosperity. It is only just that their compensation reflects the economic value they provide. Safe rates contribute to social equity, helping to reduce income inequality and ensuring that all workers can achieve a decent standard of living”.

The Union has therefore called on government through the Ministry of Roads and Highways and employers for a dialogue to resolve the matter

“It is imperative to engage in a dialogue with trade unions and worker representatives to establish and implement safe rates that will ensure fair and equal pay and improved working conditions for road transport workers”.

“Our Union stands ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to find solutions that uphold the dignity and safety of our road transport workers. We are going to take immediate action to address these issues and commit to a future where road transport workers are justly compensated for their essential contributions,” he assured.
