The Africa Center for Security and Counter Terrorism has expressed concerned about reports that bail applications are being expedited for the suspects accused of shooting and killing two police officers earlier this month.
According to the security think tank, it has intelligence that lawyers for the accused persons are working quickly to secure bail for their clients, including the main suspect Mohammed A. Damba, at the next court hearing.
“We urge the Attorney-General’s office to carefully reconsider any bail applications given the grave nature of the alleged crimes. We also want to remind the Attorney- General’s office about the ethnic dynamics of this case and we cannot allow this case to become another trigger of ethnic tensions. The Attorney-General must therefore rigorously evaluate all bail applications through an impartial lens. If we allow politics, tribalism or negligence to hinder justice, we risk re-opening deep ethnic wounds that scarred our nation’s past,” portions of a press release signed by the Executive Director, Emmanuel Kotin read.
“The Center has intelligence that Damba, who claimed to work at the Office of the Vice President, was able to secure a government-registered bulldozer to demolish a complainant’s wall before the deadly incident. How he obtained the bulldozer and was granted a service inquiry bail initially by the East Legon police for the murder charges are serious questions that demand answers,” Mr Kotin added.
The Center therefore appealed to “the Inspector General of Police as a matter of urgency to launch an independent probe into potential misconduct by the East Legon police personnel before, during and after the murder. The slain officers G/CONST BENJAMIN KOJO TINDAM & G/L/CPL TASIGYA ISSAC NGYAPUN deserve nothing but justice from the head of the Service they dutifully served. Otherwise, it is our case that the Service murdered its own. We believe that Investigators must conduct a thorough, unbiased inquiry into the murders to reveal the full truth.“
“The Center believes that the professionalism of Ghana’s police and judicial system is being put to the test. We must demonstrate that no one is above the law and that justice will be allowed to prevail fairly for the slain heroes,” the release concluded.
