According to the president of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, some members of the association have yet to receive the COVID-19 packages that the government promised the health workers.
During the peak of the pandemic, President Akufo-Addo proposed incentives for frontline health workers, including insurance packages.
But Madam Ofori-Ampofo revealed that some nurses who even fell victim to the virus have not received anything from the government.
Asked whether the nurses have so far received their COVID-19 packages in an interview on TV3, Madam Ofori-Ampofo said the members have decided not to talk about the package anymore since several efforts have proven futile.
“I thought we had closed that chapter; we’ve talked about this over and over, and we don’t want to talk about it anymore…Yes, during that period, those who were supposed to have some of those packages, never did.
“We reported to the ministry and even asked them to share the data with us in terms of those who got it and those who did not because they insisted that everybody who was supposed to receive it, received it,” said Ofori-Ampofo when she appeared on Hot Issues on Sunday, March 31.

She further indicated that, despite attempts to include nurses working in non-isolation centres at the time had failed, those who were stationed at the COVID-19 treatment centres reported that they never received their packages.

“The fact that we didn’t have it the way we wanted, those that were at the treatment centres and were supposed to receive the allowance, some gave us reports that they never did [receive them], and we shared that information with the ministry of health, and as far as I speak to you today, I’m not aware that something has been done.”
The president stressed that, as an association, they have learnt their lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, which will influence their negotiations in the event of any outbreak where their services would be greatly required.
