The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has expressed gratitude to President-elect John Dramani Mahama for endorsing him as the Speaker of the incoming 9th Parliament.
In a statement dated Sunday, 5th January, Mahama directed the parliamentary leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to nominate Alban Bagbin as the Speaker for the incoming Parliament, which will be sworn in on 6th January.
The President-elect underscored Bagbin’s remarkable public service career, which includes serving as the Member of Parliament for Nadowli, Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
In a swift response, Speaker Bagbin expressed gratitude to the President-elect for his confidence in his leadership skills as the country approaches a new chapter in its democracy.
He pledged his commitment to maintaining high standards at all levels in the 9th Parliament, stating:
Throughout my years of service to Parliament and the people of Ghana, I have always remained loyal to Ghana and committed to the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.
As Speaker of the Ninth Parliament, I will continue to uphold these values and ensure that the Ninth Parliament operates with the highest standards of integrity, transparency, accountability and inclusiveness.
Bagbin further assured:
I would like to take this opportunity to assure the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, and the people of Ghana that I will, more than before, rededicate myself fully to the task ahead of the country, working to strengthen our democratic institutions and to ensure that Parliament remains an effective and responsive institution to the needs and hopes of the people.
Meanwhile, the election of the Speaker and the swearing-in of the Speaker-elect and Members-elect are scheduled for 11:00 pm and midnight today, 6th January, respectively.
