GHANA Reinsurance PLC (Ghana RE) has presented a total dummy cheque of GH¢200,000 to three institutions as part of its 2025 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The beneficiaries were the University of Cape Coast (UCC) School of Business, which received GH¢100,000, while Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Ghana (LCCG) and the Ghana Heart Foundation (GHF) each received GH¢50,000.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Accra on Tuesday, the Managing Director of Ghana Re, Mr Seth Kobla Aklasi, stated that the company’s CSR efforts were not merely an obligation but a conscious decision to positively impact the communities that support its operations and growth.
According to him, as a key player in the insurance industry, it was essential to support institutions that provide quality healthcare and education to help develop much-needed human capital.
“A healthy population is the backbone of productivity, innovation, and economic growth. Similarly, education empowers individuals with the knowledge, skills and confidence to contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.
Mr Aklasi noted that by supporting these sectors, Ghana Re was investing not only in institutions but also in people and the future, as healthcare and education remain two of the most critical pillars of national development.
“It is against this background that the company reinvests a portion of its annual profits into worthy initiatives aimed at promoting a healthy and safe environment,” he added.
He explained that the donation to LCCG was intended to support the construction of a new 40-bed Paediatric Oncology Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The current facility, he said, could not accommodate more than 25 children at a time, despite recording about 500 new cases annually, resulting in many children being turned away.
For the Ghana Heart Foundation, Mr Aklasi said the donation would help patients access heart surgeries at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, while the support to the UCC School of Business was in response to a request to assist with the construction of six summer huts and a snack shop, aimed at reducing pressure on the main administrative block while enhancing effective learning and administration.
He reaffirmed Ghana Re’s commitment to supporting more institutions annually, as long as the company continued to make profits.
The Head of Programmes at LCCG, Ms Portia Asantewaa Agyekum, expressed gratitude to Ghana Re for its consistent support. “Ghana Re has always been a solid partner in our operations and we remain grateful. We pray for continued growth at Ghana Re so that we may continue to benefit from their benevolence,” she said.
On his part, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Emmanuel Osei, said the donation would go a long way in saving the lives of many children suffering from heart defects. He called on other organisations to support the centre to help protect and save the lives of many promising children.
