NPP communications team member Kwadwo Poku faced pushback on live television over his criticism of the Black Stars’ proposed budget for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The confrontation unfolded on the JoyNews on February 5, 2026, during a panel discussion with Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah.
Poku had questioned the government’s decision to allocate $13 million for the team, arguing that the country would not recoup the funds and that FIFA’s $10 million for qualifying should suffice.
“With the money we spend, do we get it back? If they get $10 million for qualifying, why is the government of Ghana giving them $13 million?” Poku asked, emphasizing the need for fiscal prudence.
Kyere-Duah, representing the NDC, firmly countered Poku’s claims, insisting the budget ensures the team is well-prepared and that the full amount would not necessarily be spent if the Black Stars exit at the group stage.
“The president is taking proactive measures. The money is coming from FIFA… Budgeting doesn’t mean it is spent from the start to the final. If you’re eliminated after the group stage, you will not spend all the $13 million,” Kyere-Duah stressed.
The debate comes after government announced a proposed budget of GH¢146,268,659.80 for the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup campaign.
Poku’s public questioning of the allocation was met with strong rebuttal, effectively putting him back in line.
‘Why should government appropriate $13 million when FIFA will give Ghana $10.5 million?’
