Nigeria legend John Obi Mikel has questioned the integrity of the Super Eagles’ squad selection for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, citing influence from higher authority.
Eric Chelle, who is the head coach of the Super Eagles announced his 28-man squad for the continental showpiece last week, sparking debate among Nigerian football fans.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel hinted at outside interference regarding squad selection for the CAF’s elite competition, likening the situation to late coach Stephen Keshi before the 2014 World Cup.
“I don’t think the right players are being selected⦠I think the manager doesn’t have the full authority⦠there’s a lot of influence on his selection.” He said as quoted by Africas0ccer.com.
The 35th edition of the continental showpiece has been scheduled to run from December 21, 2025 through to January 18, 2026, with 24 countries set to battle it out for the covetous trophy in the North African nation.
The Super Eagles has opened camp in Egypt, with 25 players reporting for their pre-AFCON friendly against the Pharaohs of Egypt.
Nigeria are paired in Group C against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. The West Africa football giants are expected to open their account against Tanzania on December 23, 2025.
