The Western Regional Police Command has begun investigations into a shooting incident at a mining company site at Adelekezu near Dadwen, which resulted in the death of a boy and the destruction of company property.
A press release issued by Superintendent of Police (DSP) Olivia E.T. Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, said the Police team that responded to the scene found two Sport Utility Vehicles and two tipper trucks burnt, while a pickup truck and a Toyota Land Cruiser had also been damaged.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that some youth from Adelekezu had a misunderstanding with the private security men of the company in an attempt to invade the company’s concession,” the statement said.
“In the process, they attempted to take one of the security men’s pump action guns from him, which he resisted and fired, hitting the boy,” it added.
The boy was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the release, the death of the boy infuriated the youth, who went on a rampage at the site, setting vehicles ablaze and threatening to lynch workers.
“The Police team was able to rescue 11 of the workers and also arrested suspects Gyenyame Owusu (38 years), Matthew Asamah (24 years), Nana Yaw (15 years), Yaw Opoku (16 years), and Kojo Agyei (21 years), for causing harm and causing unlawful damage.
“The Western Regional Command calls on the members of the community to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation to ensure justice is served,” the statement said.
