Dr. Mahamudu Bawumi and Kennedy Agyapong
Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is taking a 67.8% commanding lead as the preferred candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 presidential election, as a nationwide survey has put him in poll position above the four (4) other contenders.
The latest finding further solidifies Dr. Bawumia’s growing influence in the party and his popularity among delegates and a section of Ghanaians, as the NPP gears up to elect a flagbearer in January 2026.
The extensive survey conducted by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ghana, sampling more than 18,000 respondents nationwide, highlighted a strong desire for competence, experience, and development-oriented leadership, as well as clear frontrunners among potential flagbearers.
Findings from the survey reveal that Dr. Bawumia commands the support of nearly seven (7) out of every ten NPP delegates, representing a whopping 67.8% of the respondents.
Kennedy Agyapong comes closest, with about one in five delegates backing his bid (21.3%), followed by Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who earned 6.6% support, while Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong together earned 5% support.
The survey, which includes the responses of over 5,000 NPP delegates and more than 13,000 citizens (non-delegates), reflects a highly inclusive and diverse national sample with strong representation across all age groups (core ages between 26-55), across urban, peri-urban, and rural areas (41% rural).
It also covered different educational and employment backgrounds, religions (Christian 74%, Muslim 22%) and across all ethnic groups.
These demographics ensure that the results reflect the views of a wide cross-section of Ghanaian society.
The key findings of the survey on which personalities possess the required leadership qualities saw Dr. Bawumia emerging with 69.7%; Kennedy Agyapong – 22.5%; Dr. Bryan Acheampong, 6.0%; and others getting less than 1% each.
Non-delegates also supported Dr. Bawumia – 52.9%; Kennedy Agyapong – 31.2%; Dr. Bryan Acheampong, 7.9%; and the other earning what the survey described as “small single digits.”
“Across both groups, Mahamudu Bawumia is viewed as the political figure who most clearly represents the preferred leadership qualities, though Kennedy Agyapong enjoys a stronger popularity among non-delegates,” the survey found.
When asked who is best suited to be flagbearer, 67.8% chose Dr. Bawumia while 21.3% chose Kennedy Agyapong; another 6.6% choosing Dr. Bryan Acheampong, while Dr. Adutwum and Mr. Agyepong got less than 5%.
Among non-delegates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia earned the support of 50.6% of respondents; Kennedy Agyapong – 29.8%; Dr. Bryan Acheampong – 8.7%; while the other two candidates earned small single digits.
KAS, in a statement, indicated that delegates’ preferences are decisive – “Bawumia leads by a 3:1 margin, currently positioning him as the overwhelming favourite if the primaries were held today.”
The survey also found that delegates’ overall interest in the primaries stood at 84.5%, with the indication that “they are very interested in the upcoming primaries, while only 37% of citizens (non-delegates) say they are very interested. 91.6% of NPP delegates indicated they are likely or very likely to vote in the primaries.”
