A brazen theft has left 15 Senior High Schools in the Northern Region of Ghana facing a severe food shortage, just as the new term is about to begin.
Thieves raided the Buffer Stock Company warehouse, making off with over 150 bags of maize and other essential food supplies intended for the students.
This is not an isolated incident, as the same warehouse was targeted by thieves just a few weeks ago.
The recent spate of thefts has raised concerns about the security of food supplies in the region, particularly in the aftermath of the elections.
According to report the thieves have been targeting various institutions across the Northern Region, including the Tamale Metro Assembly, the Department of Agriculture, and the Veterinary Service.
The stolen goods include food, agricultural chemicals, and fertilizers.
The Headmaster of Ghana Senior High School, Douglas Haruna Yakubu, expressed his concern about the impact of the theft on the students.
“This theft will worsen the food shortage we were already anticipating,” he said.
The Coordinator for Free Senior High School in the Northern Region, Bukari Dahmani, warned that the situation could delay the reopening of schools unless the government intervenes immediately.
The Buffer Stock Company plays a critical role in ensuring food security in Ghana, particularly in rural areas.
The company’s mandate includes purchasing food grains from farmers, storing them, and distributing them to schools, hospitals, and other institutions.
