Anyone who spends time on the streets of Accra knows how demanding the life of a street hawker is. On a normal day, it means long hours on their feet, constant movement, navigating traffic, heat, and people, all while selling and handling cash from morning to evening.
In December, that pace increases significantly. There is more foot traffic, more running up and down, longer hours, and greater pressure to make the most of the season before the year ends. Transactions happen faster, more frequently, and almost entirely in cash, which brings up the constant concern of keeping that cash safe while on the move. There’s nothing worse than doing all that running only to find that you’ve misplaced some of your money at the end of a tedious day in the sun. Or rain.
As a payments focused fintech, Kowri understands this reality. Cash, for many people, is not abstract or digital. It is physical, handled repeatedly throughout the day, and carried under demanding conditions.
So as a small Christmas give-back, Kowri distributed aprons to street hawkers in selected parts of Accra. The aprons were designed with simple, functional compartments to help them receive, store, and access their cash more securely while working —especially during this intense Detty December period.
“The intention was simple. We wanted to offer something practical that actually fits into their daily lives and helps, even in a small way, during one of their busiest times of the year.” said CEO Claud Hutchful.
It was a quiet gesture of goodwill from the Ghanaian fintech, rooted in an understanding of the hustle that keeps our streets and informal economy moving every day.
Kowri, known for being The Way to Pay, prides itself in offering customers the most intelligent and seamless way to pay, track and spend. Their recently released “Money Stories” has been called the “Spotify Wrapped“ for money and is another quietly released first-of-its-kind for an African fintech.
“Even as we aim to create a continuously above par experience for our digital customers, we also have an obligation to give back to our community in meaningful ways” said Claud. “We decided on the hawkers and aprons because hawkers truly embody the cash hassle and the aprons are a functional metaphor of our promise to keep track of and transact with money in a secure and seamless manner.”
“We were actually quite surprised at their delight,” echoes Henry Sampson, COO. “We hope it makes this season just a little easier, safer, and more rewarding for those who received them.”
Look out for the Kowri aprons and spare a thought for the hawkers and what their lives must be like on a daily basis. And if you haven’t already, download Kowri and try it out for yourself. Merry Christmas from The Way to Pay
