Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate, has pledged to champion human rights and protect Ghana’s legal and economic interests in international dealings if confirmed.
During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025, Dr. Ayine outlined his vision for justice reform and his strategy to safeguard the country’s resources.
A major highlight of his proposals is the reintroduction of a revamped public tribunal system, a commitment outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2024 manifesto.
While addressing concerns raised about past human rights abuses linked to public tribunals, Dr. Ayine assured that his leadership would prioritise fairness and the rule of law.
“My proposal or my thinking going into this office is that we will enact a Public Tribunal Court Act that will be comprehensive and that will contain restrictions in terms of the conduct of the affairs of the tribunal,” he told the committee.
Dr. Ayine noted that the proposed Public Tribunal Court Act would serve as a regulatory framework to ensure that these tribunals adhere to the highest standards of justice, decentralising legal services while safeguarding citizens’ rights.
He added, “Human rights violations will not occur under my watch. This Act will provide the necessary safeguards to prevent misuse and align the tribunals with Ghana’s constitutional principles.”
Dr. Ayine also pledged to protect Ghana’s interests in international contracts and arbitration, ensuring that the country does not suffer losses from poorly negotiated agreements.
He expressed confidence in his ability to handle complex international legal cases, citing his extensive experience in arbitration.
“I can assure the house that if they [legal contracts] are before the London Court of International Arbitration, I’m quite familiar with that tribunal. I have appeared before that tribunal several times. I can assure you that I will put in measures that will ensure the interest of the public is not compromised,” he said.
The Attorney General-designate also defended the track record of the previous NDC administration, asserting that there were no questionable incidents of judgment debts under its tenure. His leadership could reshape the country’s justice system and enhance its legal standing internationally.
