Think tank Energy & Associates has urged the Mahama-led government to take swift and decisive action in curbing any power crisis.
It suggested the immediate procurement of emergency light crude oil supplies, strategic interventions to ensure steady fuel supply for West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) and a comprehensive plan to avoid a future occurrence.
These were contained in a statement issued on Thursday, January 9 following reports that the country faces power crisis due to the previous government’s failure to secure enough crude oil to power thermal plants.
“Energy and Associates Ghana calls this situation a blatant act of recklessness and had long highlighted the structural vulnerabilities in the energy sector, including debt accumulation, inadequate gas supply contracts, and poor maintenance of infrastructure,” it said.
“The outgoing administration’s inability to address these challenges reflects a disregard for the well-being of the nation.”
Energy and Associates offered its readiness to collaborate with the new administration and industry stakeholders to “restore stability and confidence in the energy sector”.
“Ghana deserves a power sector that supports its economic aspirations and ensures the well-being of its citizens.”
It cited economic disruptions, household hardships and erosion of public trust as certain consequences of this looming disaster.
