MP-elect Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has criticised a senior police officer whom he accuses of manoeuvring to replace Dr George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) following the NDC’s victory in the polls.
According to A Plus, this senior officer, who was allegedly promoted by President Akufo-Addo to undermine IGP Dampare due to his refusal to engage in electoral manipulation, is now attempting to position himself as the ideal candidate for the role.
The remarks follow pre-election concerns about President Akufo-Addo’s elevation of Mr Christian Yohonu to the role of Deputy Inspector-General of Police.
In a Facebook post on Friday, 27 December 2024, A Plus argued that the country needs individuals who are fair and professional, like Dr Dampare, in leadership positions to foster national development—not those who prioritise party loyalty over the nation.
“I’m curious about how it seems everyone in Ghana is now a member of the NDC, including a police officer who was reportedly appointed by Akufo-Addo to assist in election rigging. Today, this same officer, according to him—according to him ooo—is so NDC that he is lobbying gidigidi to be appointed IGP.
Please, we need people who are fair. People who are professionals and can stand their ground to move Ghana forward.
When you accepted that position from Akufo-Addo, you were well aware that the NPP was desperate to rig the election. They knew Dr Dampare would ensure a free and fair process, as he has proven, and couldn’t be counted on to facilitate any rigging. They were aware that removing him during an election year was too risky, so they needed someone they could control—and you stepped up, fully aware of the agenda, and began assembling your machinery,” he wrote.
He concluded:
“The Ghana Police Service is arguably one of the best in Africa when it comes to elections. The institution’s efforts are commendable and worthy of praise. Ghana’s enviable democracy owes much to the crucial role the Ghana Police Service has played. However, as with any institution, there are a few bad apples, including ‘Commander Boham.’
If Mahama appoints him as IGP, I’ll ‘break up’ with Lordina. She is a ‘sugar mummy!’ I’m going to sit her down and give her a proper briefing. You no see k?nk?nsa MP before abi? E be this same bad attitude/character wey make people vote for me. You want make I change? Sagaa!”
