A Professor at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo has told the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that they do not need to spend money going around the country to find out why they lost the 2024 general elections.
Prof Gyampo says he has already diagnosed the reasons for the defeat of the NPP.
He expressed the view that the NPP lost due to corruption, misgovernance, arrogance and economic mismanagement.
He indicated that blaming the defeat on apathy without interrogating the real reason why they didn’t vote amounts to propaganda.
“People didn’t vote because they felt let down, because of corruption, arrogance, economic mismanagement, nepotistic governance. If they know apathy caused it why are they setting up a committee to go into the reason why you lost?
“Come to us, we will tell you all the factors that led to the monumental defeat of the NPP. The NPP lost the elections in 2022, there is no need to go and waste money finding out why you lost,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 on Saturday, December 28.
The NPP has announced that it will form a committee in January 2025 to review the party’s performance in the 2024 general election.
Per the results as announced by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama polled 6,328,397 votes representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his primary rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61%.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters, National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim the result was not what they expected.
“We were very hopeful and positive, and our aim was to secure an emphatic victory at the polls. And we went very hard at it. As a party, we put in our best efforts in the campaign. I commend all members of the various campaign teams of the party, from polling stations to the national level, who also put in their very best in the competition.
“There is no doubt that the outcome of the election was not what we hoped for. We may not have won the battle, but we haven’t lost the war on the quest for a better Ghana, shaped by the ideals and philosophies of the New Patriotic Party.
“The party will, in January 2025, set up an effective and objective election review committee to take a post-mortem into the outcome of the election.
“The committee will engage all party stakeholders and the general public on the factors and circumstances leading to our defeat,” he said.
