CHOPSS urges government to settle WAEC debt promptly to release 2024 WASSCE results

The Conference of Heads of Private Second-Cycle Schools (CHOPSS) has expressed deep concern over the delayed release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

This delay, attributed to the government’s outstanding debt to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), threatens to disrupt university admissions for thousands of students nationwide.

In a press statement dated December 22, 2024, CHOPSS highlighted that WAEC’s inability to release the WASSCE results stems from a GH?118 million debt owed by the Ministry of Education. This financial shortfall has led to the breakdown of essential scanners used for processing objective test cards, further hindering the results’ release.

CHOPSS emphasized that students from private schools, who have fulfilled their WASSCE registration fees, are unfairly affected by this delay. The association noted that most Ghanaian universities have admission deadlines in January 2025, and the current situation jeopardizes students’ prospects of timely enrollment.

“The government’s failure to address this issue promptly is deeply unfair to private schools, parents, and students,” CHOPSS stated. They urged the government to urgently disburse the outstanding funds to WAEC to facilitate the immediate release of the examination results.

The West African Examinations Council had earlier confirmed that the delay in releasing the 2024 WASSCE results was due to the breakdown of scanners essential for processing objective test cards. The Council attributed this issue to the lack of funds needed for repairs, awaiting the release of additional funds from the Ministry of Education to resolve the problem.

The delay has significant implications for university admissions across the country. For instance, the University of Education, Winneba, has set its direct applications deadline for January 7, 2025.  Similarly, the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has indicated that its undergraduate admissions are still open for the 2024/2025 academic year, with applications accepted until further notice.

CHOPSS warned that if a positive response is not forthcoming in the coming days, they would be compelled to take further action in collaboration with parents and students to address the situation.
