Catholic Bishops Conference commend Dampare, NESTF for peaceful polls

The Catholic Bishops Conference has lauded the National Elections Security Task Force (NESTF), led by Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare, for its outstanding role in maintaining security during Ghana’s 2024 General Elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 19, the Conference emphasised the critical importance of safeguarding the democratic process. “The NESTF’s dedication and professional handling of security measures throughout this election period has been invaluable in maintaining peace and stability across the country,” the statement noted.

The Bishops praised the Task Force for its proactive efforts in mitigating threats, ensuring order at polling stations, and protecting voters and election officials. While acknowledging isolated incidents of vandalism and violence, the Conference commended the overall secure environment that allowed citizens to vote without fear.

The statement also highlighted the collaborative approach of the NESTF, working alongside the Electoral Commission, political parties, civil society groups, and the public to uphold peace. However, it called for continued vigilance and urged the security agencies to decisively address acts of violence, treating perpetrators as criminals regardless of political affiliations.

The Bishops stressed the importance of justice, urging the police to act swiftly and fairly to protect citizens and property. “Justice must be served,” the statement concluded, as a reminder of the shared responsibility to sustain Ghana’s democratic values and peace.
