Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had his face stitched up after he was at the receiving end of a horrendous tackle in PSG’s Ligue 1 game against Monaco on Wednesday night.
Seven points separated Monaco and PSG as both sides headed into the high-stake clash at the Fontviellie, aiming for a win.
The dynamics of the game were, however, altered significantly as PSG goalkeeper Donnanarumma was clattered early on.
The Italian goalkeeper went down and required immediate medical attention after Monaco right back Wilfred Singo found himself in opposition territory after one of his marauding runs.
The defender inadvertently caught Donnarumma in the face with his studs, leading to the goalkeeper’s eventual withdrawal after a lengthy on-field treatment.
Despite Singo being on a booking after an earlier incident in the game, the Ivorian managed to escape a sending-off as referee Francois Letexier deemed his tackle on the keeper as purely accidental.
Donnarumma’s facial laceration saw him play no part in the game, which his side eventually won 4-2 to go 10 points clear at the top of the league.
Further tests are expected to be conducted to reveal the extent of the injury and how long PSG will have to do without their first-choice goalkeeper.
