KATH to double dialysis machines to improve patient care

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has announced plans to increase its dialysis machines from seven to 14.

This improvement is made possible through partnerships and the hospital’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF).

The Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah explained that the hospital recently
received two new dialysis machines from the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL).

Additionally, six more machines, purchased at 2.8 million cedis using IGF, are expected to be installed by the end of November.

“This expansion comes at a time when the number of dialysis sessions has increased from 80 to 300 per month,” Prof. Addai-Mensah stated.

“Thanks to the government’s free dialysis care program under the National Health Insurance Scheme, we’ve been able to enhance clinical services for renal patients.”

Last year, KATH struggled with only two functional dialysis machines, forcing some patients to seek treatment at private facilities.

The hospital now sees patients referred from different parts of the country, underscoring the growing demand for dialysis services.

To meet this demand, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is working to provide more dialysis machines.

Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, CEO of the NHIA, shared that the agency has applied through the Public Procurement Authority to procure additional machines to support hospitals.

“We are ready to fully fund the free dialysis programs and ensure that facilities have enough machines to meet their needs,” Dr. Aboagye said.

KATH held a forum with senior specialists and consultants to discuss ways to improve healthcare delivery.
