The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has called on member states of the United Nations (UN) to ensure the support for the world body, is sustained if the fight against conflicts around the world is to be won.
Addressing attendees at a flag raising ceremony to commemorate the United Nations (UN) Day, on the theme, Making the UN Relevant to all People: Global Leadership and Sharing Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies, Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said the growth and prosperity that member states of the UN so desire cannot be achieved in a world that is marred in conflict and insecurity.
“It is an undeniable fact that we now live in an interconnected and interdependent world. Instability and insecurity that is destructive in any part of the world has the potential to affect the peace and security of people in other parts of the world. It is for this reason that we should all be equally concerned and pay more attention to the continuous and protracted conflicts in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin and in other parts of the world,” the Minister said.
These conflicts zones and troubled countries and regions of the world, the Minister says, presents serious challenges to the efforts of the UN to promote sustained growth and prosperity through the world.
“It therefore behoves on the international community to appropriately empower and allow the UN the space to work with its strategic partners such as regional intergovernmental organizations towards finding pragmatic and enduring solutions to these conflicts,” the Foreign Minister said.
United Nations Resident Coordinator for Ghana
The United Nations Resident Coordinator for Ghana, Christine Evans-Klock, in her address which she says is her last as she brings her duty tour of Ghana to an end at the close of the year, said the UN is delighted at President Akufo Addo’s acceptance to continue as co-chair of the UN Group of Eminent Persons for the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). Madam Evans-Klock drew the attention of Ghana to the fact that the country’s ability to achieve the 17 SDG’s depends largely on its ability to fight corruption.
“The success also depends on perception of the effectiveness of public policies and programmes to meet daily needs for jobs, sanitation, healthcare, education, housing and transportation. The design and adoption of policies in these key areas have been notable and so the focus going forward must be to ensure their sufficient funding and public accountability for the implementation and impact,” she added.
The UN Secretary General
As part of her address, the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Ghana, read the message of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres. The Secretary General observed that conflicts around the world are multiplying and people are suffering, further adding,
“But we don’t give up because we know every man, woman and child deserves a life of peace. On United Nations Day, let me reaffirm our commitment to repair broken trust, to heal our planet, to leave no one behind and to uphold dignity for one and all, as united nations.”
The UN Day
UN Day is marked annually on the 24th day October to commemorate the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. The commemoration is also used to reflect on the achievements and the challenges of the global body and map out ways to boost its operations and mandate. In 1948, the UN General Assembly declared October 24, the anniversary of the Charter of the UN, as a day to be devoted to making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the UN and to solicit the support of the world for its work.
