The Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has revived its inter-unit drill competition where all its sub units converge to prove their swiftness in foot and weapon drills.
Drills in the security forces date back centuries where well developed commands used systematic and well calculated trajectories to move troops across battle fields.
Drills served several purposes including coordinating armies in operations, ensuring that troops did not mix up with other forces and preventing troops from mistakenly firing at each other in complex terrains.
The inter–unit drill competition held by commands of the Ghana Armed Forces has been one of the flagship celebrations of the military until 2014 when it was put on hold because of increased operational assignments.
The Central Command on Friday revived the competition as it converged its garrisons and support units unto the 4BN Drill Square at the Uaddara Barracks in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.
The contingents were drawn from the 3 Infantry Batallion with the Liberation Barracks in Sunyani; the 2 Independent Recky Squadron also at the liberation barracks in Sunyani; the 4th Infantry Battalion Uaddara Barracks Kumasi and the Central Command Headquarters.
Each contingent went through systematic foot and weapon drills with an allotted time of 45 minutes to prove themselves.
In the end the Speers from the Central Command HQ proved their seniority and commandeered the highest trophy and a cash price of three thousand five hundred cedis (GHc3,500 ).
3BN and 2 Brigade from the Brong Ahafo region came second and third with the 4BN which many tipped to be among the first two, rocking the bottom in their own back yard.
Addressing the 2018 inter unit drill parade, the Command Operations Officer of the Central Command Colonel Yehusa Salifu pointed out that the revived drill competitions are necessary in sharpening the skill, discipline and unity of the troops.
He outlined, “This year’s drill competition seeks to achieve the objectives of sharpening the foot and rifle drills of soldiers; enhance teamwork among competitors, improve on troop’s turnout and to develop the leadership skills of officers and non commissioned officers.”
The Ashanti Regional minister Simon Osei Mensah who was guest of honour, expressed worry at some recent military brutalities and excesses among soldiers.
He however charged the military to adhere to high standards in the discharge of their duties to engender public confidence in their operations.
“If one soldier fails to execute the command of his commander very well it will definitely spoil the beauty of the drill at the full glare of everyone here. In the same vein, when a soldier misconducts himself outside the barracks, it tarnishes the image of the Ghana Armed Forces,” Mr. Osei Mensah advised the soldiers.
Apart from the central command Headquarters contingent which took the trophy, the other contingents took certificates of participation and cash prices.
