The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Dr Oheneba Owusu-Danso has disclosed that the facility managed to collect 83, 075 pints of blood in Ashanti Region through 93, 101 potential donors screened within 2013-2017.
According to Dr Owusu-Danso out of the 93, 101 potential donors screened, majority of the donors were students in the various Senior High Schools in the region.
Dr Owusu-Danso speaking at the celebration of World Blood Donor Day in the Region by the Transfusion Medicine Unit of KATH under the theme “Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life”, said patients of KATH are the largest beneficiaries of blood by men and women.
“I am particularly pleased with the choice of slogan for the 2018 observation for this day which is “Blood Connects Us All”. This constitutes ample testimony of the enormous role that donated blood plays in the lives of the beneficiaries particular women as they discharge the burden that nature has placed on them to give birth to you and I. But for your selfless and altruistic gift of blood especially women and children would suffer avoidable deaths,” he said.
He emphasized that giving out blood must be a constant and committed endeavor by the public to keep the country’s blood banks running especially KATH blood banks.
Dr Oheneba Owusu-Danso called on the general public to adopt a constant attitude towards donating blood to continuously stock Blood Banks across the country.
According to Dr Oheneba Danso, voluntary blood donation in the region is needed saying many lives have been saved through voluntary blood donors.
“I wish therefore to seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to all the donors for being there for us and our patients. We duly appreciate you and the spirit with which you give your blood. It is my hope that a lot more Ghanaians will learn from their contributions and be encouraged to also volunteer to donate blood for the needy to prevent avoidable deaths” he added.
