Doctors at the Accident and Burns Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have successfully operated on six year old Shakiratu Yakubu who suffered severe burns some two years ago in the Upper West Regional Capital, Wa.
The surgery which cost this family some ten thousand cedis was made possible through a Facebook campaign for support, spearheaded by Abusua FM’s Eunice Akoto Mansa Atakora Manu.
Neighbours only found three year old Shakiratu screaming for help with fire in her clothes after her mother had left her in the care of the landlady, to go fetch water.
Though medics had referred her for specialist care at KATH, her single mother, couldn’t as much as raise the transport fare to travel down to Kumasi let alone the money to pay for the surgery.
Speaking to Ultimate News after the skin grafting surgery, the head of the team Dr Emmanuel Adu explained that the medics had seen marked improvement in her condition.
He pointed out, “She is now able to sit up in her bed and even chat with her mother. If we allowed her, she can walk around but we don’t want her to move around because it will disturb the surgery.”
He indicated that the surgery plus the medications and nutritional requirements needed for the quick healing of her wounds came up to an estimate of more than ten thousand cedis (GHC10,000).
Eunice Akoto Mansah, who has embarked on similar philanthropic work through her organisation VV Foundation, narrated that she was jolted by known media personality Shamima Muslim to take up Shakiratu’s case.
She was grateful to her numerous Facebook friends who showed interest and gave willingly to bail Shakiratu out of her chronic pains and discomfort.
“We needed GHC8,000 but by this kind support, I have been able to raise GHC11,000. We need to get her mother a vocation and enroll the small girl back to school. But it is a continuous healing process so we still welcome those who pledged support,” she commended.
She was especially grateful to the NPP chairman for Kwabere West Odeneho Kwaku Appiah and Maa Ataah Opare who both gave three thousand cedis to support the worthy course.
