The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Emmanuel Asigiri has bemoaned the theft of some laptops used in training some youth in an online digital marketing and entrepreneurship employment module.
The 300 young Ghanaians who went through a three month online digital marketing and entrepreneurship training graduated yesterday (Thursday).
The training was part of government’s efforts in enhancing the capacities of the teeming unemployed youth, to acquire the necessary skills and tools that will boost their economic prospects in creating jobs for themselves and others in the digital business world.
But speaking at the graduation which took place at the Kumasi Youth Centre, CEO of the NYA, Emmanuel Asigiri, was disappointed in the graduates because some of them had refused to return the laptops given to them by the authority used for training.
He indicated that the Ashanti region had been flagged as the most notorious for the theft of these laptops by the trainees who have refused to return them.
“And I thought as the head of the National Youth Authority, being before them myself and telling them the laptops were not meant for their personal use that would have settled the matter. We sent a circular round and indicated to our directorate and the consultants that they should not give the laptops out. Based on what we are picking, my region, the Upper East region was the first to fall prey to this whole thing where young participants stole 7 laptops while the training was going on, fortunately the facility where the training was going on had CCTV cameras, so when the issue was brought to our attention and we involved the police they went through the CCTV cameras and identified those who were involved on this act”.
“We bought three thousand laptops to serve the young people of Ghana, unfortunately the young people decided not to just listen but tow a certain line. The report I have Nana Chairman is that about twenty-five laptops from Ashanti Region cannot be accounted for, that is why I say the report here is more worrying than other regions, this is how painful it has been”.
He cautioned the trainees to return the laptops or face the rigours of the law.
He indicates that the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) would start looking for the culprits.
“Anyway, those of you I’m told you signed bonds taking those laptops and have not returned them, we will pursue you to the latter because we cannot allow anybody to set us up. So please take note if you are here or not, you know them, you know yourselves take note. I have declared to my director that he must get the police and im going to speak to the regional commander of the police service to get his CID men to go after anybody who is keeping our laptops, because you have declared that you’re a thief and we will treat you as such and mind you if the police gets you, I do not want anyone to send anybody to call me and anybody who knows me will attest be it my minister anybody in government who wants to call me on these matters, I won’t budge, so if you have our laptop in your possession please hand it over before the weekend, because on Monday the CID would go after you and I don’t think that you would want to take a laptop and then for that matter would decide to go on exile.”
“I shouldn’t have been spending my time talking about these things, we should have been celebrating this moment because I’m told of the number of you who have also availed yourselves to use this program, I mean you have already started enhancing your minds and here we are the bad nuts amongst us have put us in a situation where this is the kind of message I have to start from.” he said
