The Coalition of Un-posted and Veterinary Technicians in Ghana (CUVET) have noted that the launching of the National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Policy would be a mirage if more veterinary technicians are not employed.
CUVET has noted that the success of the implementation of the policy on antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial use would be a mirage due to the poor handling of animal health which needs more veterinary technicians to handle.
The group noted that the bad handling of the health of meat producing animals is attributed to Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA’s) neglect of ensuring that veterinary technicians are posted.
National Spokesperson of CUVET, David Amoako noted that, “In the midst of all these public health concerns, there are 640 backlogs of veterinary professionals of various categories without job placement since 2011. These technical hands could have helped to save the current phenomenon of humans not responding to treatments by the use of some common antibacterial, antivirals, and antifungals and anti-malarial.”
David Amoako revealed all attempts to get MoFA to resolve the postings of Veterinary Technicians so as to safeguard the Ghanaian public health, has yielded no positive results.
“We keep on hearing promise upon promise with no backing action. The recent non fulfilling and most disappointing promise came from the Minister of State in Charge of Agriculture, Hon. Dr. Gyieleh Nurah. He categorically stated that the recruitment of vets would start in January 2018. But here we are today without even a single employed vet whiles the first quarter of 2018 has come to an end,’ he complained.
He urged the Minister of State to honour his own words within the next 14 days else they would throng his office in their numbers to demand answers.
