A lecturer at the Ashesi University Prof. Stephen Adei has charged Ghanaians to demand accountability from the 998 staff at the office of the President.
According to him, the figure doesn’t really matter but the performance is what Ghanaians should pay attention to.
He said Ghanaians should monitor if this bloated workforce at the presidency are making meaningful contributions to the development of the country.
“On the surface, almost 1000 presidential staffers seems too big. The big questions is, what are they doing? In these things, the numbers per se are not the most important because it’s about input and output. The line of interrogation should be what the number of staffers are producing and not just talk about the numbers. I think Ghanaians must demand accountability,” Prof. Adei told sit-in host of Morning Starr Kwaku Obeng Adjei.
The office of the President and its peripheral institutions is said to have employed a total number of 998 workers since 2017.
There are 9 ministers of state, 27 presidential staffers, 256 other/junior appointees and 706 employees of public/civil service staff.
A section of Ghanaians and opposition parties have criticised the Akufo-Addo’s government for employing such a huge staff at a time the country is struggling to fix its economy describing it as ‘job for the boys’.
Members of New Patriotic Party (NPP) then in opposition, blasted the Mahama administration for having a bloated staff.
