A private legal practitioner Kwame Adofo has suggested to Ghanaians not to pay attention to supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the Jubilee House staff.
He said the noise about the staff from the camps of the NDC is a political gimmick purposely to score cheap political points and throw dusts in the eyes of Ghanaians.
The office of the President and its peripheral institutions is said to have employed a total number of 998 workers since 2017.
There are 9 ministers of state, 27 presidential staffers, 256 other/junior appointees and 706 employees of public/civil service staff.
A section of Ghanaians and opposition parties have criticised the Akufo-Addo’s government for employing such a huge staff at a time the country is struggling to fix its economy describing it as ‘job for the boys’.
But speaking on Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, Lawyer Adofo called on Ghanaians to use their energies to discuss issues that will be profitable to the development of the country.
He described the staff at the presidency as a ‘reasonable figure’ saying NDC members lack truthfulness in their DNA.
‘You can see clearly that we are wasting too much of our natural resources discussing this issue, because if you think about it seriously, its 998 minus 702 that is the actual political employment which has been created at the presidency by the president… If you look at it, the figure is not overly large, but of course some people will play politics out of this no matter what, people who are sitting in the middle of the defence, lets not be caught with by bait, they bait us and we get sucked in their politicking, seriously, the figure is just over 200 that’s all,… who are those fanning the fire?. Who are those raising the alarm bells?, is the NDC, so when something is coming from the NDC, principles and truthfulness can you expect that from the NDC?, no they don’t have it. Its the party’s DNA that if you tell the truth, they will kick you out of the party,’ he said.
Lawyer Adofo indicated that there are some people who worked under the erstwhile Mahama administration who are still working under the office of the current president.
‘I’m told that the list for 2017 was 998, now out of the 998, 702 are civil/public servants. If that is the case, then where lies the one thousand minus two list that we are talking about?. Because it looks we are doing a disservice to this country especially when the workers of the public service are maintained routinely. I think its a bit far fetched from the truth for us to be saying that the list is one thousand minus two, because its not one thousand minus two, there are people who served under John Mahama who are still there for example the mowers, cleaners, do you think that the new government will just change someone who is just a gardener?,’ he asked.
