The Mayor of Kumasi Osei Asibbey Antwi has said, a ploy by some of his colleagues in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi to demonstrate against KMA’s decongestion and relocation of traders from the Central Business District (CBD) especially those selling on pavements and other unauthorised places won’t stop him from fighting a legitimate course.
Members of the elephant family trading on pavements illegally over the last weekend issued a statement demanding immediate dismissal of the Kumasi Mayor by the government appointing authority.
The Pro-NPP group claims lack of proper planning on KMA’s decongestion exercise and relocation of traders from unauthorised is making the ruling party unpopular in the Ashanti region which happens to be the stronghold of the party.
“Majority of evicted traders in this exercise are active members of the NPP who devoted their time to campaign for the party whiles in opposition. This exercise is killing their traders and we think the Mayor is incompetent to manage Kumasi. His actions are making the government unpopular,’’ they said.
However, responding to the trader’s claims, the Mayor of the Kumasi City revealed the presence of the traders on the streets particularly those at Adum PZ area has halted the construction of roads in front of the New Kejetia market to a period of six months.
“Now these traders have blocked the road direct opposite the Kumasi Children’s hospital with their illegal trading activities and as I speak with you right now the materials for the construction of the road are ready. Therefore it not wrong for KMA to relocate them to Nana Afia Kobi and Racecourse markets, I think they should reconsider their plan of demonstrations because we are not going to relent on our efforts on the relocation exercise,’’ he warned.
He revealed, the assembly has dialogued with the traders concerning their relocation to a convenient markets for far long but recalcitrant traders are unwilling to move.
“The claim by the traders that we have not provided convenient market places for them before relocating them is unfortunate and full of deception. We have constructed 8 new markets in various communities in Kumasi to support their trade. We have dialogued with them for far long and we can’t tolerate them anymore. Pavements are meant for pedestrians not for people to sell on. They can’t make life on the streets, therefore I will like to advise the traders to start looking for space at the various new markets,’’ noted.
