The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has threatened to prosecute recalcitrant drivers who will flout its directives to relocate to their newly-designated terminals.
A decision has been taken for all the 24 transport unions, operating in the metropolis, to quickly relocate to their designated terminals.
Any commercial driver who would be found loading at unapproved locations in the Central Business District (CBD) would have his vehicle impounded and the offending driver prosecuted.
The Kumasi Mayor Osei Assibey Antwi speaking to the media during a joint meeting between the assembly and Transport Unions said every intra-city commuter vehicle (trotros) permitted to undertake on street stations must have the name of the transport union it belongs to, conspicuously embossed on the vehicle and the destination board displaced.
According to Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, loading of passengers at the frontage of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KMA), Santasi and Suame Roundabout is strictly prohibited,
He added that the KMA has made provisions at specific joints at the CBD for commuting drivers to operate in a more regulated function.
“During the assembly meeting with all the 24 transport unions in the metropolis, we have come to a conclusion that all vehicles assigned to designated terminal or loading points should conduct their business solely at these terminals or loading points. Not more than four vehicles (trotro) should be allowed on the street, on in any occasion to load passengers. All eligible vehicles on street- parking should be held off the street and only move in to pick passengers in turns” he said.
