The regional chairmanship race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti region, the party’s strong hold, appears to be taking on a rather dramatic turn as Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives in the region have declared support for the party’s current regional party chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako who is seeking re-election.
Chairman Wontumi as he is well known within political circles assumed the party chairmanship role in the year 2014 after a contentious election which several observers said was bought by the highest bidder.
Mr Antwi Boasiako has since been vociferous pushing the party’s agenda in the region and championing the party’s 2016 electoral campaign which turned out a huge voter population for the party’s strong hold.
The NPP was able to appreciate its votes from 1,531,152 representing 70.86% in the year 2012 to 1,647,274 representing 76.27% in the year 2616 earning Wontumi the accolade of Governor of the Ashanti Region.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Asokore Mampong Alhaji Seidu Alidu who speaks for the coalition of MMDCEs for ‘Wontumi’ insists Mr Antwi Boasiako has demonstrated enough competence to help the party retain the feat it chalked in the Ashanti region which is the party’s strong hold.
He told Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, “the man who has led the success should not be substituted for anything. He is very decisive and very sincere and these are some of the traits that we want. We are saying that the man should be given the right of continuity.”
Meanwhile, it appears Mr Wontumi’s close contender Mr Robert Asare Badiako has backed out of the race following the announcement of this whopping support.
