Founder and President of Breast Care International (BCI) Ghana, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Peace and Love Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, has charged Ghana Health Service (GHS) to bring breast diagnose closer to women to enable them report any abnormality in their breasts early to health facilities for treatment.
According to Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, nurses should visit homes to bring health care to the people, examinea them for breast and cervical cancers and refer patients to the hospitals.
Dr. Beatrice Addai speaking at the opening of a series of Prevention Health Units in its catchment government hospitals and health compounds by program organized by Bogoso/ Prestea Golden Star Ladies Club expressed deep worry about continued reliance on herbs for treatment of breast and cervical cancers by many a Ghanaian woman.
According to her, the alarming rate at which women were dying of breast cancer and other breast related diseases in the country demanded that all females, particularly the youth, undergo screening irrespective of their health status.
She has, therefore, advised women to go for early and prompt clinical screening on breast cancer for detection and medication.
She added that her outfit will increase the survival rates, reduce morbidity and establish database for breast cancer through research.
The Vice President of Bogoso/ Prestea Golden Star Ladies Club Philipa Varris described breast cancer as the most common cancer affecting women in this country.
According to Philipa Varris with 2,900 cases diagnosed annually by the Golden Star Ladies Club, 17% prevalence rate and one in eight diagnosed women succumbing to the disease.
She said, in Ghana, the number of women with breast cancer is increasing, with changing lifestyles and increased reported cases.
“Unfortunately, over 60% of Ghanaians women only report to hospital in late stages limiting treatment options. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Ghana,’ she added.
According to the Vice President of Bogoso/Prestea Golden Star Ladies Club Philipa Varris, in a five year initiative of the Golden Star Ladies club and with partner support, more than 1,400 women and girls have undergone clinical breast cancer screening, saving as many as 270 lives.
She said, from the club humble start in 2013, the aim of the programme was to bring free and confidential screening to communities.
