Over 2000 members of the Kumasi Petty Traders Association have threatened to stage a massive demonstration against the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) over poor sanitation in the Kumasi Metropolis.
Residents in Kumasi have raised concerns over how filth have engulfed the city especially Central Business District.
Kumasi Metropolis noted that there have been outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases due to the low level of public hygiene in the city.
The traders complained of dumping of human excreta, refuse into gutters close to market places due to lack of waste bins.
“We have complained to the assembly to provide us waste bins to help control poor sanitation in the Metropolis as well as the market places. Filth threatens our life because poor sanitation in the Central Business District can possibly cause cholera outbreak. KMA has failed the fight against sanitation in Kumasi,” they said.
However, the Chairman of the Kumasi Petty Traders Association Nana Akwasi Prempeh speaking in an interview with Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo called on KMA to be proactive in the sanitation fight.
According to Nana Akwasi Prempeh, KMA cannot win the fight against sanitation without putting proper measures in place by providing waste bins in some vantage points in Kumasi.
Enforcement of Sanitation Bye-Law
Chairman Akwasi Prempeh charged Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to enforce sanitation laws to enable it deal with persons who violate such bye-laws.
According to him, enforcement of the sanitation laws will help the assembly to win the fight against sanitation in the Kumasi Metropolis.
He added that authorities should direct city guards from the KMA to arrest persons who defy sanitation laws and hand them over for prosecution.
“We the traders are highly disappointed in Kumasi Mayor Osei Assibey Antwi because he couldn’t fulfill his promise to us when he was approved by the assembly members. He promised us that he will make the city the cleaner city but now the Kumasi is a dirty city because he has failed to put good measures in place,” he said.
Attitudinal change to sanitation
Nana Akwasi Prempeh urged the people in the region especially traders to change their attitudes towards sanitation to help address sanitation problem in the region.
“Though the KMA has failed to provide waste bins in some vantage points in the metropolis but we have to change our attitude towards sanitation. Negative attitudes of us to sanitation and can cause cholera outbreak and floods in the Metropolis and we are going to be affected not them” he said.
Petition to Kumasi Traditional Council on sanitation
Nana Akwasi Prempeh disclosed that the association will petition Kumasi Traditional Council over poor sanitation in the Metropolis to put KMA on their toes.
He added “When we the people of Kumasi speaks on sanitation issues, they don’t mind us, KMA has failed to address the issue but we believe in Nananom that they can put KMA on their toes to keep the city clean”.
