Unity hall came tops in this year’s TEK Smartest 2018 battle of intellectual supremacy, a contest held among the traditional halls and international student hostels of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The two rival halls the unity hall and university hall best known as Katanga hall had hinted abstaining from the competitions over concerns the organizers the National Union of Ghana Students did not come to their aid in the wake of controversies about the conversion of the all male halls into mixed halls.
Unity hall however turned up with three contestants and not even the continuous call of the quiz master Kafui Dae could prod University hall to turn up.
The competition however kick started with a few modifications to the rules to accommodate the absence of Katanga.
The students went through grueling questions and aptitude tests which demanded critical thinking to answer.
Africa hall, the international students and Republic alls were the first to be evicted from the competition leaving three for the final round.
Unlike Tech Smartest 2017 which had no winners because of a commotion, the competition this time round crowned the Unity Hall the Smartest.
Independence hall came second with Queen Elizabeth Hall turning up third.
Engineering student and Leader of the winning team, Kojo Agyarko described the competition as intense but worthwhile.
He told Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, “I have been made to study a lot of things that I don’t think I would have studied as a normal student. I had to study wide general knowledge and I am very sure I can have an intelligent conversation with everyone on every topic in the world.”
Local KNUST NUGS president Derrick Okyere Wireko Antwi was satisfied this year’s competition was not marred by the rancous protests that marred last year’s TEK Smartest.
He indicated, “It’s quite fortunate in the end it didn’t happen like last year where there was no winner but this time around, Unity Hall is the clear winner and congratulations to them. You can see the stage set up and everything has been on point. Ultimate fm also partnered to make it a success. EIB has been with us through out and we hope they will be with us for TEK Smartest 2019.”
Sharing his impressions about the event, the Vice Dean of the KNUST, Professor Wilson Agyare encouraged that such contests be continued to bring out the best in students.
“As an educational institution, this is one of the best programs you can have. It doesn’t only test the academic performance of students but how students are able to think on their feet and I think it is unique looking at the fact that among all the tertiary institutions it is only KNUST that has a program like this.”
Commenting on the decision of Katanga Hall to pull out of the contest, Prof. Agyare pointed out, “may be they are afraid of a thinking competition because they should have been here to show us that they can do it.
He however dismissed the justification that the students of the hall were protesting the plan of the university to begin admitting female students into the all male hall insisting that Unity Hall would have also abstained if it were the case.
For the losing teams; it was still for them a battle of wits and brains but better luck as it will always be said for TEK Smartest 2019.
Sponsors included EIB Network, Ultimate FM, Gagrafa Press, Revelio Media, Rex TV Show and X live.
