Over 300 students at the Adventist Senior High School and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, on Valentine’s Day donated blood to support the MTN Save a Life Campaign.
The exercise spearheaded by the MTN Ghana Foundation, was in collaboration with the National Blood Bank to augment blood supply in hospitals across the country.
The donation, which is the eighth time, forms part of MTN’s Valentine Day events.
According to the World Health Organization, even though 108 million blood donations are made annually worldwide, safe blood available is always insufficient to meet the needs of users due to high demand, especially in developing countries.
Commercial Manager for MTN Ghana, Northern Zone, Peter Bimpeh explained to Ultimate Business that, their motivation for the blood donation drive was to restock the blood banks and also promote one of the Foundation’s key target of health.
“We chose to donate blood or approach this course largely because it forms part of our key area of focus as long as MTN Ghana Foundation is concerned and so as a business we see this as a worthy course because we’re contributing to a national course that I believe will go a long way to help everybody.”
The MTN Commercial Manager hinted that “MTN mobilised some support from our partners in terms of packages that donor will take, did a lot of campaign across the entire country, where we sought support from the general public to willingly come and also donate to this drive.”
“As long as it is for a good course, I don’t ever think we will stop. It is in the eighth year and still counting. I believe so far, we’ve given over 6,000 pints of blood, and it has gone a long way to help the entire country and so I don’t foresee the exercise ending soon”, Peter Bimpeh added.
On her part, Head of Transfusion Medicine at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr Shirley Owusu Ofori expressed her unit’s gratitude to MTN for their sustained support.
“MTN is one of our biggest corporate partners and our relationship began 8 years ago and we’re very grateful. Each year on Valentine’s Day we have two major sessions, usually in the communities but in the last few years, we’ve gone to KNUST, a tertiary institution and also a second cycle like the Adventist Senior High School at Bantama.”
“MTN supports us by branding the event, giving us the publicity, voluntary donations, their staff donating and also giving us wide media coverage; which is good for telling the story of blood donation.”
“We know that as we counting the years, we will go on to celebrate a silver anniversary and it is all for the good of voluntary blood donation”, Dr Owusu Ofori stated.
The MTN Save a Life blood donation drive was replicated across other major cities across the country.
