A former District Chief Executive Officer of Asante Akyem Agogo in the Ashanti Region Paul Kingsley Avero has stated that militant tactics adopted by the Akufo-Addo’s government to evict Fulani herdsmen from the area and the country at large will not wash.
He blamed successive governments for not making any concerted efforts in curbing the Fulani menace in the country saying shooting the cattle is not the surest way to go.
According to him, the country’s leaders always attempt to drive away the Fulani herdsmen and their cattle whenever dry season sets in by making noise on airwaves and go to sleep when its rainy season.
Mr Avero indicated that the country lacks the roadmap to tackle the menace asking if the government knows all owners of the cattle.
‘We go back to sleep when the rainy season takes off, when some of the cattle go into bushes and we go to sleep and we resurrect the issue when we are in the dry season. Is there a policy to solve this issue? Have we agreed on the modalities if they are to stay or not? Have we communicated that one to them? Over the years we have not done that, the awkward way of doing things will not help us. The soldiers and police stationed at Agogo where are they driving the cattle to?, to Sekyere Afram plains or Kwahu areas,’ he pointed out to Journalists.
He suggested to the government to count the number of cattle each owner has thereby resettling them far from people’s farms.
The former DCE of Agogo discounted claims that some bigwigs own the cattle which have been destroying farms saying majority of the Fulani herdsmen do not have a clue about the whole issue because they have not been engaged.
‘There are no big shots anywhere who own the cattle, there are few Ghanaians who own some of the cattle, but they are Fulanis,’ he said.
His comment comes on the back of a gun battle between some soldiers, policemen and Normads when the former attempted to evict the latter from farmlands belonging to indigenes.
Three soldiers and a policeman sustained various degree of injuries during the shoot-out.
Operation cowleg taskforce team have been deplored to Agogo to restore calm in the wake of heightened tension.
