Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have reiterated calls for the construction of more halls of residence for the growing number of students.
The Provost, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Professor Robert Clement Abedu made the call speaking at the launch of the 50th anniversary ceremony of the Continental Hall.
Professor Abaidoo lamented that the Unity hall which hitherto accommodated less than four-hundred and forty-eight students now hosts two thousand students with several more students perching in hall rooms.
This he says mounts enormous pressure on hall facilities reiterating need for government to be proactive in envisaging the increasing need for more facilities of accommodation for students.
“The initial hall population for all the four hundred and forty eight rooms of the Unity hall was less than 448 but
Professor Abaidoo lamented, “Our population as a nation has increased at an alarming rate and so is the number of students who qualify to pursue university education but no attempt has been made to increase the much needed residential facilities
“Now I am told that the hall student population is close to two thousand a whopping increase of about 500 per cent. In simple mathematic terms, the few amenities enjoyed by the residential students in the early seventies has dwindled by 500 times,”
Speaking to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, the Continental Hall President Noble Edmond complained that the situation of overcrowding is a veritable challenge putting enormous pressure on students who have to ration utilities to survive.
He pointed out, “there are two washrooms on each corridor and you are totalling over a hundred and thirty on each floor. Because water does not flow 24-7, they have to ration it before we can survive.”
The launch of the year long Jubilee ceremony saw the unveiling of the logo and cloth for the commemoration.
The hall will also be embarking on a number of activities including seminars, donation outreaches to less privileged homes, career development fairs and a mammoth health screening exercise.
