The Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah has stated emphatically that the Kumasi Academy Senior High School (KUMACA) incident has become a major security threat in the region.
He feared that some unscrupulous persons can take advantage of the situation by kidnapping the students adding that angry parents can also demonstrate against the school authorities which will destabilise the peace in the region.
Six students of Kumaca have died from suspected meningitis after three died under similar circumstances in April this year.
The Ghana Health Service and the World Health Organisation (WHO) team in Ghana this morning embarked on some vaccinations of all students.
According to reports, over 22 students are on admission at various hospitals in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.
Some parents stormed the school today December 5, 2017 to pick their wards from the school saying it is better for the wards to fail the exams than to stay in the school and strike to death by the strange disease.
Mr Simon Osei Mensah addressing both students and parents in the school appealed to parents to allow their children stay in the school whiles they take the medicine donated by WHO.
According to him, all students of KUMACA will be vaccinated before they are allowed to go home.
“The death saga is a security threat because the students and parents can organize demonstration against the school and also bad persons can take this as an opportunity and kidnap some of the students. I’m appealing to the parents to calm down and allow their wards to stay in the school. We will allow the students to go home in three days time. We are also going to fumigate the school,” he said.
Blood samples of the dead students and that of those on admissions have been sent to Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research to detect the cause of the sickness and the death.
