The former President Jerry John Rawlings is calling on Zimbabwe power brokers not to destroy the embattled President of the country Robert Mugabe’s legacy.
He described Mr Mugabe’s African pride, dignity and audacity as ‘unassailable’.
Mr Rawlings expressed hope that the transition runs smoothly.
“As unavoidable as the Zimbabwe situation may be, let us hope that the transition occurs without destroying Mugabe’s legacy and dignity unduly. His African pride, dignity and audacity were unassailable. He served and lived for the dignity of his fellow black in a manner that so many of us fell very short of,” the former military leader eulogised in a statement.
Mr Mugabe is said to be under house arrest following military takeover of the country.
The 93 year old President sacked his Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and declared his wife Grace as his vice. Grace is reported to have fled to Namibia over the unrest in the country.
