Ban importation of frozen chicken -Poultry Farmers to Gov’t

The former Ashanti Regional Chairman of Poultry Farmers Association Mr Kojo Asante has called on government and Ministry of Agriculture to ban importation of frozen chicken.

Mr. Kojo Asante speaking in an interview with Abusua Dawuro’s Osei Kwadwo said local poultry industry will revive to create jobs if government ban frozen chicken importation.

According to Mr. Asante, about 90% of the market has been taken by the imported frozen chicken adding that they are struggling to sell the 10%.

He added that importation of frozen chicken has become a major challenge affecting local poultry industry.

“Government should ban the importation of frozen chicken and revive the struggling local poultry industry to create jobs.

‘Local poultry industry is collapsing due to importation of frozen chicken. If government bans the importation of frozen chicken, it will revive local poultry industry and create jobs to reduce unemployment rate,” he said.

Mr. Asante therefore appealed to government to build processing plant in the region to boost their production.

However, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Ministry of Food Agriculture (MOFA) Rev. John Manu attributed the importation of frozen chicken to the inability of the local poultry industry to meet the demand.

He added that government will stop importation of frozen chicken if the local poultry industry is able to meet demand.

“Government will continue to import frozen chicken if the local poultry industry fails to meet their demand,” he said.
