Students of the African faith Primary School study in a make shift shed put together by the school’s teachers.
Students are left at the mercy of the weather and learning come to an abrupt end.
The public basic primary school, located in a prime area at Santasi- Anyinam in Kumasi of the Ashanti Region, surrounded by posh houses lacks walls, windows and doors.
The teachers have no staff common room and have to sit behind some of the classrooms to mark their work. KG 1 and 2 as well as primary 1 are under an uncompleted building donated by a benevolent landlord.
The construction works ongoing in the surrounding homes are all a distraction to the students as well as the other classrooms that surround it.
The headmaster of the school Mr. Addai Lewis who sits under his make-shift office under a tree says all efforts to get authorities assistance to complete the school with countless written letters has proved futile.
Mr. Lewis said that although their structures are not up to par, it has not affected students’ performances in the BECE saying all the students had placements in good schools.
He further appealed to government to extend the school feeding programme to the school.
“I won’t say that we have infrastructure deficit. We are facing a challenge so far as infrastructures is concerned, so we want the corporate bodies to come to our aid, the Government, even last week the KMA boss himself was here and he witnessed everything himself. We have a pupil population of about 300 and this school is the only public school in this area,” he said.
Some of students who spoke to Ultimate News said “When it rains we can’t learn, we go to the house over there and when the wind blows then our black board is on the floor so we can’t learn and when we are learning, then they are making noise at the bar over there.”
“When rain falls, sometimes we cannot even sit in the classroom, maybe our chair have broke when we are learning we cannot sit and write on it, sometimes when the furniture is not enough we stand and write because we can’t see from the board and when people are passing they make noise and we can’t learn in the classroom,” they complained.
It was a poor sight when the Chief Executive of the KMA, Osei Assibey Antwi visited the school to assess firsthand, the plight of the students.
He assured that his office will expedite action to fast track the release of resources to complete the school buildings.
“But I want to assure them that the Honorable Member of Parliament here Honorable Kennedy has brought this issue to up and it has already been forwarded to the Minister of education so once I have seen it myself, I will fast track with an action to make sure they get a new school,” he stated.
