The Assembly Member for the Kronum Abuohia community in the Suame Constituency has appealed to city authorities to help dredge the Nana Owabe River immediately.
According to Richard Kwame Sarpong, the riverbed has over the years been filled with sand and filth causing heavy flooding when it rains.
Nana Owabe which joins the Barekese Dam remains the source of potable drinking water for residents of Kumasi and beyond.
Saturday night’s long downpour affected over 200 people causing them to lodge with relatives and friends because their homes were submerged at window and roof levels.
“I have notified city authorities of the necessary dredging of the Owabe River and all I get from them is that I have to exercise patience because there is not enough cash at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to undertake such a project. We are appealing to the President through the Regional Minister to come to our aid. If we do not desilt the river, I’m afraid, the story will be the same if it rains heavily again”.
Scores of residents were seen on Monday morning interacting with each other on the way forward to avoid future occurrences.
The Assembly man has also hinted of a demolition of all houses built in water ways.
