It was both fun and competitive when female prison personnel and wives of prison officers gathered on the premises of Ultimate FM on the Nkrumah Memorial holiday.
The women staged a mammoth cooking competition with some preparing Tuozafi, Konkonte, Banku, Fufu and Jollof rice.
The contestants were drawn from the Prisons Officer’s Wives Association (PROWA) and the Prison Ladies Association in Amanfrom, Central Prisons, Obuasi, Manhyia and Ahensan.
The women from the Central Prisons who spearheaded the programme won the cooking contest with 88% followed by the Ahensan and Obuasi chapters who scored 78% and the Kumasi female central prisons ladies who scored 77%.
One of the leaders of the Central Prisons ASP Mabel Bofa told Ultimate News, “Usually people think security ladies don’t know much about house hold chores and especially about cooking and you know majority were here to taste the food and in fact none of the contestants got below 70% and this is an A plus.”
An organiser from the Kumasi Central Prisons, CSP Yayira Archromettle commended the ladies for demonstrating the preparation of healthy traditional meals.
“We have always been talking about how we can keep ourselves healthy and maintain physical exercise but we also thought it wise that we can keep ourselves healthy through what we eat especially through our traditional meals,” She pointed out.
The Ashanti Regional President of the Chefs Association Samuel Kofi Peprah who served as a judge reiterated the need for Ghanaians to be proud of their local meals.
He made specific reference to Konkonte, a cassava flour meal usually eaten with soup as one meal which got the top spots in a cooking contest in South Africa because of how it was garnished and presented.
One prison officer who stole the biggest fans of the show was Erika Akyeaa Aninful who won the dancing competition.
Female Prison officers who acquitted themselves creditably in the service were also commended and given citations.
The women officers who were presented with citations included ASP Mabel Boso – Kumasi central prisons, ACO Estela A. Frankibi – Kumasi Female Prisons, CO Vida Oheneba Frimpong Manson – Amanfrom Camp Prisons, MRS. Mabel Awuku President of Prisons Officer’s Wives Association ) PROWA), ACO Winifred Ntim – Ahensan Camp Prison and DSP Elen Nyame – Manhyia Local Prisons.
