Addressing a cross section of world leaders, Presidents and Business leaders at the 2017 Blomberg Global Business Forum on the topic, “Africa and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), President Akufo Addo says educating the peoples of Africa is the shortest route the continent can use as a springboard to achieve all the remaining SDG’s.
The President to this end underscored that his assertion is the reason why his government has chosen to invest in the children of Ghana by introducing it flagship programme ” Free SHS”. The free SHS education programme he believes will in the short to long term impact greatly on the country’s development efforts.
“Until this year, on an average, 100,000 Ghanaians children dropped out of the educational system between Junior High School and Senior High School largely because their parents couldn’t afford it. Even though they have the requisite qualification, it turn out that on an average, a 100,000 children every year couldn’t take their place in the Senior High School. What it would mean is that over 10 years, a country with the population 27 million who have one million of its young people will have their education truncated at the level Junior High School and that is unacceptable cost to any society. This year which is the first introduction of the system of Free SHS education, the number has reduced from 100,000 to 36,000” the President said.
